Cape York Wilderness Adventure
Fringed by the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea, Cape York Peninsula is a remote and pristine wilderness, shaped by winding rivers and expansive floodplains. It’s a place where you can stand at the northernmost tip of the Australian mainland, explore the world’s oldest rainforest, and venture into rugged, untamed frontier country.
For much of the past 250,000 years, Cape York was connected to New Guinea, allowing a continuous exchange of plant and animal life that has left the region with a remarkably rich natural heritage. This biodiversity is especially apparent along the Wenlock River, which boasts more freshwater fish species than any other river in the country. You can also experience the Peninsula’s extraordinary ecological variety at Piccaninny Plains, a sanctuary managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC).
